# Classic wooden boat storage

Wood moves. A planked hull that dries out over winter can leak for weeks in spring. Classic boats do best indoors, out of the sun, in a building that is not bone-dry, with a yard used to handling wood.

## Wooden boat storage spec sheet

- Typical boats: Mahogany runabouts, launches, cedar strip boats, older sailboats
- Storage: Indoor, cold or heated; heated buildings need humidity control
- Support: A cradle shaped to the hull, not just stands
- Winter work: Varnish, bottom paint, refastening, engine rebuilds
- Spring: Planked hulls may need time in the water to take up before use

## Wooden boat questions

**Is heated storage good for a wooden boat?**

Only if the building keeps humidity up. Dry heat can open seams. Many owners prefer a cold building out of the sun.

**Can I store a classic outdoors under wrap?**

Some do, but sun, freeze-thaw and trapped moisture are hard on varnish and planks. Indoor is the safer choice.
