What storage looks like here

Winnipeg's May 15 to October 31 driveway window leaves half the year when a boat or trailer needs a home, which makes winter storage a natural fit for owners headed to Gimli or Kenora.

Winnipeg-area owners commonly use indoor heated or cold buildings and outdoor lots with shrink-wrap, as boats are pulled for the winter. Demand is driven by the long freeze, city driveway-parking limits and the number of boats that travel to Lake Winnipeg and Lake of the Woods on trailers.

Keeping the boat at home

Winnipeg's Zoning By-law 200/2006 says that between May 15 and October 31, a maximum of one recreational vehicle, travel trailer or motor home may be parked on a driveway in the front yard leading to a parking space, or in a side or rear yard. The clause does not name boats; a councillor's 2017 post says boats count as RVs, with fines up to $1,000 outside the dates. A committee was reviewing the timeline in June 2026, so confirm with the city.
