Before you sign the contract

Questions to ask before you book storage

Most storage problems come from something nobody asked in September. Here are the questions owners wish they had asked, grouped by what goes wrong.

How is it measured?

Security and damage

Does staff check wraps, stands and roofs after heavy snow or wind?

What insurance do they require?

Many marinas require liability cover, often $1M to $2M. Check your own policy covers the boat ashore. See insurance and storage.

Access and work

Can I get to my boat in winter?

Some yards close or limit access from November. Indoor racks may need staff to move boats.

Can I do my own work?

DIY rules vary: some ban outside technicians or power tools, some allow everything.

How is the launch order set?

First booked, first in, or by location in the yard. Ask when your boat will be in the water.

Questions

Should I visit the yard first?

If you can. Look at how boats are blocked, how close they sit and how the wraps look. It tells you a lot.
